Coach Wilson Message: Winter Season 2025-26

Hi Rowers and Parents,

Please refer to the below information about the winter conditioning options.  There will be two different winter workout sessions this winter, and rowers may choose to attend one or both of the winter workout programs. Note that you are not required to attend any - you are still able to row this spring even if you do not attend winter conditioning - we understand that rowers have other commitments, including other sports. Our goal is to allow rowers the opportunity to workout during the winter with a coach and rowing specific workout plan.

This winter the Guilford Rowing Coaches will be offering winter workouts for all interested boys and girls.  Listed below is all the information you need to know about both sessions of winter workouts.

First Session: Monday, November 17 to Monday, December 22, 2025
  • Practice will be Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday nights. Practice will be from 4:15pm-5:45pm. (Some practices may be canceled due to holidays or snow days)

  • All Guilford High School students that are planning on rowing in the spring are welcome to participate (including all fall novices).

  • Practice will be at the High School Fitness Center, which is next to lower turf field/track.

  • This program will be designed and run primarily by Coach Matthew Wilson. Rowers will get a designed workout to complete during each practice, and will receive coaching and specific feedback. It is like having a trainer at the gym. Workouts will primarily consist erging and circuits.

  • Rowers who decide to participate must commit to showing up to multiple workouts each week and must be committed to working out. This is not a social outing. If you are at the workouts the coaches expect you to put in 110% effort and work hard to improve. The Guilford rowing coaches reserve the right to ask a rower to not continue session 1 of workouts if they are not working to improve.

  • Attendance will be taken each day and all erging pieces will be tracked. All athletes are expected track their own results as well.

  • The fee for the first session of winter workouts will be $75.  Checks should be made payable to: "Guilford Rowing Inc." and mailed to or placed in the mailbox of Treasurer Ginny Wilson at 276 Village Pond Rd, Guilford, Ct, 06437.

  • All rowers must fill out an out-of-season consent form if you did not row in the fall. This can be found in "Registration and Forms" under the Team Info menu.

The winter workout sessions will help rowers prepare for the 2026 season ahead.  The goal is to provide rowers the opportunity to meet the physical demands of the sport and maximize their individual performance.  The benefits are: better performance, building strength and endurance, less season fatigue, reduce muscle soreness, less susceptibility to injury, and provide quick recovery to potential injuries, to name a few.

Please send your check to Ginny Wilson at 276 Village Pond Rd, Guilford, CT if you would like to sign up for either winter workout sessions. If you are doing both sessions you may give one check totaling $200.

Best,

Matthew Wilson
